Waterproof Ugg Boots: Which Ones Actually Keep Water Out
Standard sheepskin is naturally moisture-wicking — it pulls dampness away from your skin and allows air to circulate. That's why your feet don't sweat in ugg boots the way they do in synthetic-lined shoes. But moisture-wicking is not the same as waterproof. Untreated suede absorbs water like a sponge, and once it's saturated, you've got stiff leather, compressed fleece, and dark tide marks that may never fully come out.
Waterproof ugg boots solve this with two features that standard models don't have: sealed seams and a factory-applied water-resistant treatment on the upper. The stitching holes — normally the first entry point for water — are sealed shut. The suede or leather is treated so that rain and slush bead up and roll off instead of soaking in.
Rain vs Snow: Choosing the Right Boot
For rain and wet city streets: A treated Classic Short or Classic Tall with water-resistant suede handles puddles, light rain, and damp grass without issue. You don't need a heavy-duty winter boot — you need suede that won't stain and seams that won't leak.
For snow and slush: Step up to a boot with both waterproofing and an aggressive traction sole. The Adirondack combines sealed seams, a waterproof leather-and-suede upper, and deep rubber lugs that grip packed snow. See our full ugg snow boots guide for more on cold-weather models.
How to Keep Your Ugg Boots Waterproof
- Re-spray every 4–6 weeks during wet season. The water-resistant coating wears down with use.
- Wipe down after every wet wear. Use a damp cloth to remove salt, mud, and residue before it dries.
- Dry them properly. Room temperature, stuffed with newspaper, away from direct heat.
- Deep clean once a season using our full cleaning guide. A clean surface holds protector spray far better than a dirty one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are ugg boots waterproof?
Standard ugg boots are not waterproof — the suede is naturally absorbent. Specific waterproof models use sealed seams and a factory-applied water-resistant treatment to repel rain and snow.
Can I make my regular ugg boots waterproof?
You can make them water-resistant (not fully waterproof) by applying a quality sheepskin protector spray before the first wear and re-applying every 4–6 weeks. This causes light rain and splashes to bead off the suede. However, it won't seal the stitching.
Can you wear waterproof ugg boots in heavy rain?
Yes. Models with sealed seams and treated uppers are designed for wet conditions including steady rain. The sheepskin lining inside stays dry and continues to insulate.
How often should I re-apply waterproofing spray?
Every 4–6 weeks during wet season, or after any deep clean. If water stops beading on the surface and starts darkening the suede, it's time to re-spray.
